Sweating is a phenomenon that happens in the soap when it is exposed to air. It is a reaction that takes place between moisture in the air and a humectant that is formed in the soap. Humectant is a substance that readily absorbs moisture from its surroundings.
Soap sweating is one of the problem faced by soap makers. Soaps tend to sweat a lot particularly in winter and rainy season. When the soaps are wrapped,the wrapped cover absorbs the wetness and does not looks good or pleasing. This gives a poor appearance to the soap. Come on let’s know how to rectify and overcome this problem.
REASON FOR SOAP SWEATING
As already said humectant absorbs the moisture from the air. Glycerin in soap formation is a by product of the saponification process which acts as a humectant. Glycerin attracts moisture from the air and which results in soap sweating. It seems like a frost layer or water droplets over the soap.
The absorption of moisture depends upon the humid environment too. More humidity results in more soap sweating. Actually glycerin is very much essential for the softness of the skin as it gives moisturizing effect. If the soap that we use has more glycerin, a thin layer of glycerin is left on the skin. This will then draw moisture from the air and thus gives moisturization to the skin. The solution for this soap sweating is discussed below.
STEPS TO OVERCOME:
a) EXPOSE TO BLOWER/FAN:
After the soap solution is poured into the mold, it is left for curing. During curing process, the soap has to be kept in a less humid place. Added,place a table fan or blower in front of the mold. So that the air circulates throughout the room. Continuous air supply will be there, when placed before the blower. This makes the soap dry and prevents soap sweating.
b) WRAPPING/PACKAGING:
Once the curing is over, the un-molded soap is wrapped in a cloth bag which absorbs the water droplets in the soap. After wrapping, even packaging also plays a vital role. Eco-friendly cotton cloth bags are also used for packaging. This method also works well to prevent soap sweating.
